COUNTRY

The State of Maldives consists of 1,200 tiny coral islands in the Indian Ocean southwest of Sri- Lanka. The 400,000 inhabitants are distributed to about 80,000 in the capital, Malé, and the rest spread out over more than 200 of the remaining islands. The Island groups are collected in 26 atolls, these are a group of small coral islands which originally formed circular reefs around a volcanico. The islands were created when the volcano slowly sunk into the ocean, leaving the reef, which has become a circle of small islands. From north to south the island state extends over 800 km. Nature is almost completely unspoiled on most Maldivian islands and it is practically impossible not to come across a coconut palm. On the reefs that encircle all the islands thrive colourful coral and an abundance of tropical fish. The large sea creatures are represented by dolphins, sharks and manta rays with a wingspan of 6-8 feet.
Maldives holds several geographic records. It is Asia's smallest country, the world's flattest country with the highest point of just 2 ½ meters above sea level and it is aslo the world's smallest country with Islam as a religion. Maldives practised Buddhism as a religion but eventually Islam was established as the state religion in the 12th century. The beautiful paradise islands were colonized by the Portuguese, Dutch and British and later gained its independence in 1965.

Glue sniffing and chemical solvents are the most popular. Over the last few years there has been an alarming increase of stronger drugs such as "brown sugar" and cocaine. Some of the main reasons for the increase of drug abuse on the island are a very high rate of unemployment among the youth and limited training.

Our partner in the Maldives runs a little turtle rehabilitation center, ideal for rehabilitating sea turtles, mostly green turtles (Chelonia mydas). It is a new Marine Center located far from the city; this gives the turtles an ideal environment for rehabilitation.

The project has three main components:
- Collection of turtles
- Care & Rehabilitation
- Release of the turtles

Collection of turtles
The ideal situation is to let the turtles be in their natural environment without human interaction. In this project the turtles are only taken in if they are in a critical condition or situation such as, if they are caught in fishermen's nets and then being given to the project. Others are rescued from the different islands where they have ended up in an unfortunate situation. Some are rescued from people trying to sell them as pets for tourists and locals.

Care & Rehabilitation: When a turtle is brought to Marine Center, you as a volunteer will help to care for the turtle until it is ready to be released into the wild again.
Releasing turtles: When the turtles have grown to the appropriate size, they are moved into a sea cage before being finally released back into the wild. As a volunteer in this project, you will also help to teach at the local school, raising awareness of the importance of preserving the turtles.
